When people hear "AI in Belgian agriculture", many farmers picture wildly expensive robots reserved for mega-farms in the Netherlands or the United States. The reality in 2026 is quite different: the most useful artificial intelligence tools for a Belgian farm are not machines but software — software that handles paperwork, monitors crops and livestock, and helps sell better. Belgium has roughly 35,000 farms according to Statbel, and their number shrinks every year while the administrative burden per holding keeps growing. A family farm in Wallonia today juggles CAP declarations, animal health registers, environmental obligations and, increasingly, a direct-sales business — all with very few hands. That is precisely the kind of context where generative AI delivers real value: little staff, many repetitive tasks, and data that already exists but goes unused. Why Belgian farms are strong candidates for AI

The paradox of Belgian farming is that it is highly technical yet barely digitalised on the management side. Livestock: herd monitoring and animal health

Livestock is where "field" AI is most mature, because the data already exists. A milking robot produces per-cow, per-day data; connected collars and ear tags detect heats and rumination; the dairy sends back detailed analyses.

AI turns those streams into actionable alerts. Heat and calving detection: current systems spot behavioural changes hours in advance, directly improving insemination success rates and reducing calving losses. Health: a drop in rumination or a production dip flagged two days before visible symptoms means a mastitis treated early — lower vet bills, less milk discarded.

For farms without robots or sensors, generative AI is still useful in another way: analysing the dairy's results (an assistant that reads the monthly PDF and flags cell-count or content drift), preparing Sanitel documents, maintaining the treatment register. The principle is the same as for SME inventory management: the data exists, it is just locked in formats nobody has time to read. AI reads them for you.

Direct sales and short supply chains: AI on the commercial side
